USEC Workers Prepare for More Layoffs

About 700 workers at Paducah's United States Enrichment Corporation Plant have been laid off since the plant stopped enriching uranium nearly a year ago. More layoffs are slated for late June or early July.

Ky. Energy Secretary Hopeful for a Good Start on PGDP Deactivation This Year

After meeting Monday with new U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters said he is hopeful for a good start on deactivation of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant this year, with decontamination beginning in fiscal year 2015.

The United States Enrichment Corporation is in the shutdown process at the DOE-owned plant after failing to negotiate a new federal contract.

Beshear Calls Energy Sec. Meeting a “Productive Exchange" on PGDP

Gov. Steve Beshear met with new U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz Monday,  regarding the uncertain future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and its 1,100 workers.

Beshear called his meeting with Moniz  a “productive exchange.”

U.S. Department of Energy Seeks Proposals to Extend Operations of Gaseous Diffusion Plant

The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking proposals from companies for the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant to try to cut costs while preserving some or all of the 1,200 jobs at the the uranium enrichment site.

An emailed release from the DOE details a formal request for proposals from companies that want to lease or purchase the facility for commercial purposes.

Department of Energy Official Outlines Search to Fill Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant


The Department of Energy recently hosted a two day workshop  in Paducah to meet with a variety of regional and global company leaders on the prospects of reindustrializing the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion plant. The DOE owns the PGPD and leases it to companies.

Currently, the United States Enrichment Corporation or USEC leases the facility to re-enrich uranium for power plants with the help of 1,200 employees. USEC’s operations are scheduled to end in May 2013.
