Communities throughout western Kentucky and southern Illinois are contending with high water, hail damage, and downed trees this morning following severe storms that passed through our region last night.
Residents in Beulah in Hopkins County reported a large funnel cloud at about 7:30 p.m., and a large wedge-shaped tornado close to a mile wide was reported in Christian an hour later. Winds of up to 70 miles an hour were recorded near Elkton in Todd County.
The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services must pay more than $300,000 in attorneys’ fees to the Louisville Courier-Journal and Lexington Herald-Leader after violating the state Open Records Act.
A $3 million renovation for Lake Barkley State Park is among the legislative priorities for the Southern Pennyrile Chamber Alliance in 2014. Trigg, Christian and Todd make up the chamber alliance.
Christian County Judge Executive Steve Trimble said the facelift to the Lake Barkley campground and lodge is something the alliance has been working towards for several years.
“Obviously, as you well know, LBL is our state’s number one tourism draw, over a million people come in there each year," said Trimble. "Tourism obviously is very big in Trigg County and, you know the lodge appearance through the year is kinda, there’s been some renovation, but it’s still kinda worn and outdated.”
The United States Economic Development Administration is issuing $1.5 million to Todd County to construct a manufacturing training facility. The EDA expects the funding to create 110 new jobs and $3.5 million in private sector investment in Todd County. The EDA’s investment is intended to support long-term economic recovery in the community, leverage private investment and promote disaster resiliency.
A large number of Elkton residents gathered yesterday at a City Council budget meeting to offer opinions on the re-awarding of a cemetery maintenance contract to a man charged with manufacturing methamphetamine. Only one was allowed to speak.
The council has chosen to stand by an April 8th decision to give the contract to Watson Ricchuite despite his indictment on meth-related charges April 21st.
