A Marshall County grading system change means no more “straight A’s,” and no more “F’s.” Marshall County School System this year began a plan to eliminate letter grades at all six elementary schools. The district has joined others across the state implementing a “standards-based grading system,” in which teachers measure learning based on skill sets. The first school to make the change is Central Elementary, with the other five district elementary schools coming on board next year.

Preliminary numbers show Murray State student enrollment is up this fall, after it dipped during the summer. University officials reported to the Murray State Board of Regents today that enrollment rose four percent from last year for this fall. And first time freshman numbers were up five percent. Summer class enrollment fell nine percent from last year.

Kentucky's public high school seniors scored higher on the ACT college entrance exam than a year ago, but their overall performance remains below the national average. State education officials say the average composite ACT score rose to 19.5 for Kentucky's public high school class of 2012, up from 19.2 in 2011.

Today on NPR:  Chen Guangcheng is one of China's best-known activists for his fight against forced abortions. Security forces had been stationed outside his house for 18 months, but he managed to escape despite being blind. His exact whereabouts are unknown, but supporters say he's safe.

Kentucky Legislation:

Governor Steve Beshear is adding his voice to one of President Barack Obama's top campaign issues. The president spoke at two college campuses this week urging Congress to prevent an automatic rate hike in interest on student loans from taking effect. Now, Beshear has penned a letter to all six members of Kentucky's Congressional delegation asking for them to block the increase. Beshear says if the rate hike goes into effect it will add an average of $940 to each student loan every year. The rate hike will affect more than 100,000 Kentucky students.
