OVC First Round Tourney Scores

The OVC Men’s Basketball tournament kicked off in Nashville last night. In early round play, Southeast Missouri downed Eastern Kentucky, 75-65, and Jacksonville State beat Austin Peay, 75-70. Southeast Missouri moves on tonight to face Tennessee Tech, and Jacksonville State takes on Morehead State. The Murray State Racers have a bye until the semifinal tomorrow night, when they will face the winner of tonight’s SEMO-Tennessee Tech game.

Tax Fraud Investigation Leads to Drug Arrest

A Murray Police Department investigation of a case of tax preparer fraud has led to one arrest and additional drug charges. Officers served a search warrant Monday afternoon at the business FO SHO DOUGH TAX following a tip of suspicious account activity by a local bank. A search of the business and residence of owner Silvia Jones turned up over 10,000 dollars in cash and four pounds of marijuana. Police arrested 20-year-old Anna Urquhari at the Jones residence on charges of trafficking marijuana.

Jury Convicts Man in Western Kentucky Pedestrian Death

A jury has convicted a 47-year-old Daviess County man of reckless homicide in the hit-and-run death of a teenager two years ago.  The circuit court jury also found Jeffery John Kotarek guilty of leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence.  The jury recommended Monday Kotarek serve five years on each count with the sentences to run consecutively for a total of 15 years.  The case stems from the March 2010 death of 13-year-old Madalynn Matlock, who was hit four days earlier as she walked along Old Kentucky 54 near Philpot.

Funeral Services for Local Soldier to be Held in Florida

The family of a 44-year-old U.S. military officer from western Kentucky shot to death in Afghanistan over the weekend says his funeral will be held in Florida, where his wife and children live.  Air Force Lieutenant Colonel John Darin Loftis was one of two high-ranking military officials killed Saturday in an attack at the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul. He was originally from Paducah, and attended high school in Calloway County.

Murray Man Charged with Murder

 

A Murray man accused of Murder will be arraigned Tuesday.  57-year-old William West allegedly shot and killed 39-year-old Joseph Gaskill on Friday at Zimmerman Apartments on Wiswell road.  Police say West was a tenant at the apartment complex, but they’ve yet to release  a motive. West remains in the Calloway County jail on a $500,000 dollar bond.

New Racer Ranks

The Murray State Racers have climbed back into the top ten in this week’s ESPN rankings and moved up two spots in the AP poll. The now 9 and 12 ranked Racers, respectively, are 28-1 after beating Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech on the road last week to close out the regular season. The Racers begin OVC Tournament play in Nashville on Friday. Murray State sits atop conference standings giving them a bye and an automatic bid to the semi-final round. The other OVC bye goes to Tennessee State, who handed the Racers their only loss on the season on February 9th.

Crews Find Body of Barge Worker in Tennessee River

Officials say crews have found the body of a barge worker who fell into the Tennessee River in Marshall County over the weekend.  Marshall Rescue Chief Curt Curtner tells WPSD-TV co-workers lost contact with the man around 1:30 Sunday morning. He says crews were called in to help search and the man's body was located about an hour later.  Curtner says the man's identity isn't being released pending notification of kin and the outcome of an autopsy.

Paducah Native Dies in Afghanistan

Paducah native and Calloway County High School alumni Lieutenant Colonel John Darin Loftis was among those killed in Afghanistan Saturday in a Taliban attack. Lieutenant Colonel Loftis was one of two who died in the attack on a heavily guarded ministry building in Kabul. The Taliban claim the attack is in retaliation for reports of Qur’an burnings at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul. Loftis is survived by his wife and two daughters in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Marshall County Group Looks to Go Wet

A group comprised of restaurant and resort owners in Marshall County is making a push to allow the sale of alcohol in the county. The group, called "Marshall 1st", is attempting to get the 2,100 petition signatures required by state law to allow the issue to be put up for a special vote. "Marshall 1st" spokesperson Sissy Wommack says the group is taking on the issue to try and boost economic growth.

Madisonville Church Employee Arrested for Child Pornography

A Madisonville church maintenance worker charged with 300 counts of possession of child pornography is in jail on a $10,000 dollar bond. Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant at 25-year-old Martin Clouse’s home Wednesday night. Police say the warrant was part of an investigation of online child pornography sharing that began in November. Pastor John Thomas of Christ the King Church, where Clouse was employed, says Clouse rarely had contact with children at the church. He also says they perform background checks on employees and attend training to protect children in the church.
