Workers at a Webster County smelting facility who feared losing their jobs at the end of the year have received some good news. 

Officials at the Century Aluminum plant in Sebree have announced that they won’t have to cut back production and lay off workers after all.

  Century Aluminum plans to continue operations at its aluminum smelter in Hawesville, Ky., but the company will still idle 60 percent of its working capacity at the plant later this month, resulting in more than 300 layoffs.


A western Kentucky coal miner was killed early Wednesday morning at a mine in Webster County.

According to a news release issued by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, 29-year-old Rickey Thorpe of Dawson Springs was repairing a continuous miner head when it fell, crushing him.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission has selected a consulting firm to audit the management of Big Rivers Electric Corporation after the company lost two of its largest customers. 

Massachusetts-based Concentric Energy Advisers will begin the focused management audit later this month.

Sebree Alcohol Vote Fails

Voters in Sebree, Kentucky have decided against allowing restaurants to sell liquor by the drink with meals. The Gleaner reports that the measure on yesterday's ballot in the Webster County city failed by a 3-2 margin. The final vote was 270-180.
