Paducah's bustling with new enterprises and there's another start-up in mid-to-late September when Sara Bradley's new farm-to-table restaurant The Freight House is expected to open in the old freight depot on South 3rd. While putting the finishing touches on the restaurant, Bradley's food has been previewed at Paducah's Farmers Market and Dry Ground Brewing Company. The focus is southern influence and locally sourced fare. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte meets the chef and learns more about how the Paducah native fell in love with food.

Soon, you may not be able to ignore how many calories are in the breakfast sandwich or doughnut you like to stop for in the morning.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday will release new rules that will require chain restaurants with 20 or more locations to begin posting calorie information on their menus.

"Americans eat and drink about one-third of their calories away from home, and people today expect clear information about the products they consume," FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg said in a statement.

Mayfield has passed a new city-wide smoking ban in public buildings and restaurants.

The city council approved the ordinance's second reading yesterday 5 to 4.  It passed the first reading last month 6-4. The ordinance is modeled after Paducah’s smoking ban.

Mayor Teresa Cantrell said the ordinance had been in the works for about 18 months and that it was out of concern for the health of residents as well as employees.

A Murray city councilman says the group’s decision to allow Sunday alcohol sales at a golf course sends mixed signals to the community even though the issue seems dead.

Councilman Greg Taylor is one of three council members who voted against allowing Sunday sales. He says in a previous reading of the ordinance that allowed sales at the Murray Country Club, the Public Safety Committee suggested Sunday restaurant sales as well. The restaurant language did not make it to a council vote.

Taylor says while the golf course can serve alcohol on Sundays, restaurants won’t anytime soon.

From NPR: Food waste is the No. 1 material going into landfills according to the Environmental Protection Agency. And a large chunk of it is coming from restaurants. All that wasted food doesn’t just make a rank smell, it’s contributing to global warming too.

The Hopkinsville City Council is reviving a smoking ordinance proposed earlier this year. Committee of the whole members consider the measure Thursday to ban smoking from indoor places such as restaurants and bars. Mayor Dan Kemp proposed the new law in April, and it was set to come up for a vote in June.
