Want A Calorie Count With That? FDA Issues New Rules For Restaurants

How many calories in that doughnut? A Starbucks coffee shop in New York City displays calorie information next to menu items. New FDA rules will require all chain restaurants and similar eating establishments to post calorie labels.

Soon, you may not be able to ignore how many calories are in the breakfast sandwich or doughnut you like to stop for in the morning.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday will release new rules that will require chain restaurants with 20 or more locations to begin posting calorie information on their menus.

"Americans eat and drink about one-third of their calories away from home, and people today expect clear information about the products they consume," FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg said in a statement.

Mayfield City Council Passes Public Area Smoking Ban Ordinance

Mayfield has passed a new city-wide smoking ban in public buildings and restaurants.

The city council approved the ordinance's second reading yesterday 5 to 4.  It passed the first reading last month 6-4. The ordinance is modeled after Paducah’s smoking ban. 

Mayor Teresa Cantrell said the ordinance had been in the works for about 18 months and that it was out of concern for the health of residents as well as employees.

Sunday Alcohol Sales at Restaurants Unlikely

A Murray city councilman says the group’s decision to allow Sunday alcohol sales at a golf course sends mixed signals to the community even though the issue seems dead.

Councilman Greg Taylor is one of three council members who voted against allowing Sunday sales. He says in a previous reading of the ordinance that allowed sales at the Murray Country Club, the Public Safety Committee suggested Sunday restaurant sales as well. The restaurant language did not make it to a council vote.

Taylor says while the golf course can serve alcohol on Sundays, restaurants won’t anytime soon.

Supporters Say Hopkinsville Smoke-Free Ordinance Good for Health, Economy

The Hopkinsville City Council is reviving a smoking ordinance proposed earlier this year. Committee of the whole members consider the measure Thursday to ban smoking from indoor places such as restaurants and bars. Mayor Dan Kemp proposed the new law in April, and it was set to come up for a vote in June.
