Illinois Unveils Medical Marijuana Rules

A new Illinois law legalized medical marijuana on January 1st, but until regulations are final, patients still can’t use cannabis without risking arrest. 

One state agency is giving patients a first look at its proposed rules. It’s an initial step toward sorting out how medical use of marijuana will work in the state. The Illinois Department of Public Health plans to post 48 pages of draft rules Tuesday.

Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo Leaning Towards Medical Marijuana Legalization

A leading Kentucky politician is weighing the idea of legalizing medical marijuana in the state. 

House Speaker Greg Stumbo said today he's leaning toward supporting the use of medicinal marijuana and that the topic is worth debating. Legislation to legalize medical marijuana has been introduced in the General Assembly in the past but has never received the support needed to pass.

Stumbo raised the issue after Attorney General Jack Conway sent an advisory letter to Governor Steve Beshear, Agriculture Commissioner James Comer and other state leaders to clarify current law related to marijuana’s cousin, hemp.

Poll Shows Major Support for Medical Marijuana in Kentucky

A new poll shows 78 percent of Kentuckians support the legalization of medical marijuana, while others would be fine with widespread legalization.

The Kentucky Health Issues Poll has conducted polling on a wide array of issues for the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky over the past few months, from a statewide smoking ban to health insurance coverage.

Opponents Call Illinois Medical Marijuana Bill Dangerous

A group opposing legalized medical marijuana in Illinois says there are dangers in allowing patients access to the drug.

The American Society for Addiction Medicine and a former Drug Enforcement Administration official are among those who say there are FDA-approved options patients can take instead. They also claim patients could end up with a surplus, which could find its way into the wrong hands.

Illinois House Approves Use of Medical Marijuana

The Illinois House has approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Lawmakers voted 61-57 Wednesday to allow physicians to prescribe marijuana to patients with specific terminal illnesses or debilitating medical conditions. The legislation goes to the state Senate, where a similar version was approved in 2009. Senate President John Cullerton's spokeswoman says he supports the legislation.

Medical Marijuana Supporters Rally in Frankfort

FRANKFORT — Saying the push for industrial help may help their cause in the future, supporters of a bill establishing a comprehensive system for medical marijuana in Kentucky rallied Wednesday in the Capitol Annex.

Senate Bill 11, known as the Gatewood Galbraith Medical Marijuana Memorial Act, is sponsored by Sen. Perry Clark, D-Louisville. Clark acknowledged the struggles the bill might face in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but he said industrial hemp's momentum may help the medical marijuana cause in future legislative sessions.

Medical Marijuana Supporters to Rally in Frankfort

Advocates of legalizing marijuana for medical uses in Kentucky are rallying Wednesday afternoon  in the Capitol Annex in Frankfort.

Sen. Perry Clark, a Democrat of Louisville, has introduced Senate Bill 11 into the state Senate. If passed the bill, known as the Gatewood Galbraith Medical Marijuana Memorial Act  would "establish a comprehensive system for medical marijuana in Kentucky."
