Twenty-three states currently allow certain patients to use marijuana for treatment, but Kentucky isn’t one of them.

The Kentucky Baptist Convention is taking credit for the failure of medical marijuana bills in this year’s General Assembly and is already gearing up to fight similar legislation next year.

The medical marijuana bill has likely died in the Kentucky House. On Thursday, the bill was discussed in the Health and Welfare committee but wasn’t given a vote. After the committee hearing, House Speaker Stumbo, the bill’s sponsor, said the legislation wouldn’t pass during this General Assembly session.

Leaders of both houses of the Kentucky general assembly remain committed to passage of legislation to address heroin problems.

Area 51 Growers, based in New Athens, Ill. and Sikeston, Mo., has reached an agreement with the city to install a $4 million medical marijuana cultivation facility on 10 acres of municipally-owned land.

A Kentucky legislative committee heard testimony this week from veterans who say marijuana helps them treat symptoms of their post-traumatic stress disorder. Veterans say medical marijuana would alleviate PTSD symptoms better than pharmaceutical drugs.

Wednesday, Kentucky lawmakers once again considered legislation that would make marijuana legal for medicinal use.

The legislature’s Interim Joint Committee on Health & Welfare heard pleas from a nurse practitioner and people with disabilities who say that the drug, which is currently available for medicinal use in 22 states, would alleviate symptoms of pain.

By law, the only piece of legislation that the 2014  Kentucky General Assembly had to pass was a two-year state budget. All else, as Will Rogers put it, is applesauce.
