The Mayfield Cardinals have won the Kentucky High School Athletic Association 1A state football championship again.

Mayfield defeated Williamsburg 42-0 at Bowling Green’s L.T. Smith Stadium Friday. This is Mayfield’s third championship in the last four years, and 10th overall.

Mayfield Animal Shelter Gets PetSmart Grant

A member of the Mayfield Graves County Animal Shelter board of directors, Doug Carneal, talks about its receiving a PetSmart Charities grant for spaying and neutering dogs outside the city limits. Paul Schaumburg, Graves County Schools

Larry Wooley of the Graves County Truck Pullers Association joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good, to talk about the Truck & Tractor Pull, this Saturday. Six years ago, Larry and members of the association decided to host a benefit show for the school system. Since then, they've raised more than $125,000. This year's event will be held 7 p.m. on Saturday (August 17) at the Mayfield Fairgrounds. Proceeds benefit Christmas assistance programs. Tickets are available at the gate, $10 for adults, $5 for children between 5 and 12, free for children 4 or under.

More than 100 people received free medical care on the first day of a week-long run for a free clinic in Mayfield.  The medical services are part of an Innovative Readiness Program hosted by the Delta Regional Authority  in partnership with the Department of Defense. The program provides budding military doctors training in disaster response situations before being deployed to duty.

Free medical services will be offered in August in Mayfield thanks to a partnership between the Department of Defense and Delta Regional Authority. Mayor Teresa Cantrell says the medical, dental and eye care services will be offered through the DOD’s Innovative Readiness Training Program, which aims to prepare the military in case of a disaster and provide services to the community.

Mayfield has passed a new city-wide smoking ban in public buildings and restaurants.

The city council approved the ordinance's second reading yesterday 5 to 4.  It passed the first reading last month 6-4. The ordinance is modeled after Paducah’s smoking ban. 

Mayor Teresa Cantrell said the ordinance had been in the works for about 18 months and that it was out of concern for the health of residents as well as employees.

They talk about the efforts of Gateway Academy to issue diplomas to some who might not otherwise receive diplomas, how Gateway stands out in the state of Kentucky and other similar schools, some changes coming to the school, and the recent graduation of their 500th student.

Shane Gregory speaks with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about the Ice House Gallery in Mayfield. Shane talks about the current exhibit, Botanical Art, running through July 20. The Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild hosts artwork depicting botanical subjects in painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture. In addition to the current gallery, the Ice House houses a meeting space for local quilters, a photographers group, painters group, and other workshops. See more at IceHouseArts.org

Jessica Currin was found dead behind Mayfield Middle School in 2000. Five years later, the investigation into her murder was stalling. A suspect had been charged, tried and acquitted. Mayfield’s police chief and assistant chief resigned, claiming it had nothing to do with the case. The state police took over, but made little headway. So people began asking for federal involvement. But local involvement made the difference.
