A man suspected of killing a state trooper on Interstate 24 has died after he was shot by police in Kentucky. The suspect, Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks, 25, was shot after a brief manhunt, according to the Kentucky State Patrol.

It all began Sunday night, when Trooper Cameron Ponder, 31, pulled a car over on I-24. The suspect then drove off, setting off a car chase, police say. After a pursuit of some 10 miles, the chase ended, and Ponder was shot to death in his police car.

Teams from Kentucky State Police and the National Guard have spent the summer trying to rid the state of an illegal crop.  

Trooper Corey King says teams fly over the commonwealth each summer looking for marijuana. 

"We're looking for those cultivating marijuana small-scale like out in the gardens to the large scale in the quantities of thousands that's out either in a rural spots or out in the cornfields," said King.


  Kentucky State Police are investigating a Saturday shooting in Ballard County's Wickliffe City Park.

Kentucky State Police have charged 45-year-old Michael Jack Higgs of Grants Pass, Oregon with third degree use of a weapon of mass destruction after an explosive device was found in his car Thursday morning during a traffic stop. The device was rendered safe by KSP personnel. 

The incident closed Interstate 24 in Lyon County for hours. Both west and eastbound lanes reopened to normal traffic before 1:30 p.m.

  A former Kentucky State Police trooper accused of inappropriate contact with a minor has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and will serve 30 days in jail.

Donald Crawford entered his plea Tuesday morning in a Livingston County courtroom. He is under deferred prosecution until July 2017, after which his official misconduct charge will be dismissed if he meets certain conditions.

The Kentucky State Police are investigating a home invasion and murder in Todd County in which a Mennonite man was killed and his wife seriously injured.

A recently-graduated Kentucky state trooper was killed Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle wreck near Grand Rivers.  23-year-old Trooper Eric Chrisman of Lawrenceburg was responding to a reckless driving complaint on US 62 approximately two miles west of Grand Rivers when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed into the other lane, and hit a tractor-trailer truck.  Chrisman was pronounced dead at the scene.  The other driver was treated at Marshall County Hospital and released.
