Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles plans to announce an initiative to combat hunger today.  The Ag Department says Quarles will unveil a program at the Kentucky Fruit and Vegetable Conference in Lexington that creates economic incentives to provide fresh local produce for residents in need.  Quarles formed a statewide Hunger Task Force in 2016 to address the problem at a time when food banks were struggling to keep up with demand.

  A mandatory GMO labeling law in Vermont could increase food costs for low income families in Kentucky. State Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles says the law, which goes into effect this Friday, could ‘upend the market’ and adversely affect farmers who sell their products across the U.S.

Donations made to the Ag Tag Fund through the Kentucky Farm License Plate donation program totaled $540,357  in fiscal year 2015. That money goes toward 4-H, Future Farmers of America, and department of agriculture promotional activities like Kentucky Proud. 

Agriculture Commissioner James Comer is challenging leaders in eastern Kentucky to accept the decline of coal production and invest in a new economy to help pull the region out of poverty.

"A lot of leaders in Eastern Kentucky keep talking about ‘coal is the answer and there is a war on coal.’ I’m a friend of coal. I support the coal industry. But the coal industry’s future doesn't look bright and we have to look beyond that and learn to develop a new economy in Eastern Kentucky," he says.

Before he joins the call for legalized industrial hemp, Gov. Steve Beshear wants law enforcement officials to resolve their concerns about the issue.

The issue: Some Kentucky officials believe legalized industrial hemp would be good for Kentucky's economy, but law enforcement officials are concerned that such a move would conflict with efforts to crack down on marijuana growers.
