The Paducah Board of Commissioners has approved an agreement with McCracken County to lease $3 million to repay the city approximately $1.4 million for the costs associated with relocating the Convention Center dome and storage building.

The board behind the Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center Corporation (CCC) has decided to self-manage the Julian Carroll Convention Center.

This move negates a prior arrangement to let Owensboro’s LinGate Hospitality run the convention center. LinGate are developing the nearby Paducah Riverfront Holiday Inn, set to open sometime in 2017.

The Paducah City Commission got an update Tuesday night on a new downtown hotel that will connect to the Julian Carroll Convention and Expo Center. Paducah Riverfront Development Authority Executive Director Steve Doolittle says the Hilton Garden Inn will give a “stunning” look to downtown.

“I think when PRDA approved the major earthmatic elements we had a very good discussion about getting a hotel that didn’t look like it was an interstate hotel that really fit the urban fabric of downtown Paducah,” Doolittle said.

The city of Paducah is one step closer to a new downtown hotel. The Kentucky Tourism Development Act Authority Board approved $4.5 million in tax credits to build the Hilton Garden Inn at the pavilion site adjacent to the Julian Carroll Convention Center according to Paducah Riverfront Development Authority director Steve Doolittle.

The Paducah Riverfront Development Authority signed a Franchise Agreement with Hilton Worldwide to build a 121 room, seven story Hilton Garden Inn. The announcement comes months after PRDA Executive Director Steve Doolittle's initial estimate. The long planned hotel will connect to the Julian Carroll Convention Center by a bridge over the floodwall.

A new Paducah hotel that would connect to the Julian Carroll Convention Center downtown is one small step closer to coming to fruition.

The City Commission met with City Attorney David Denton in closed session this morning to review a loan offer for the project. A local bank gave the developer that offer this week. City spokesperson Pam Spencer says the plans are not final yet.

Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center Corporation Chairman Phil McIntosh says operations at the Julian Carroll Convention Center are stabilizing after former executive director J. Patrick Kerr embezzled more than $230,000 in center funds. McIntosh says he thinks the center will continue to need financial assistance from the city and county until a new hotel built adjacent to the center can replace those funds.
