U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it has acquired new space in federal prisons to house immigrant detainees — more than 1,600 beds.

Because of a "current surge in illegal border crossings" and the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance policy," ICE entered into agreements with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), the agency said Thursday.

Activists across the country say they are being targeted by federal immigration authorities for speaking out at protests and accusing the government of heavy-handed tactics.

The Trump administration has warned that anyone in the country illegally could be arrested and deported under tough new enforcement rules. And federal officials deny allegations of retaliation.

But the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups say they have documented two dozen cases of immigrant activists and volunteers who say they have been arrested or face fines for their work.

James Schwab has resigned from his job as a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, saying he didn't agree with Trump administration officials' use of "misleading facts" to attack Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf after the mayor issued a warning about an immigration sweep in late February.

The American Civil Liberties Union says that U.S. immigration authorities have forcibly separated hundreds of migrant parents, most of them asylum seekers, from their minor children for no legitimate reason.

The ACLU requested class-action status on Friday, expanding an existing lawsuit against the Trump administration filed on behalf of an anonymous asylum seeker from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who was allegedly detained for months — more than 2,000 miles away from her 7-year-old daughter.

The closing of three Nicholasville Mexican restaurants Tuesday has an employee of at least one nearby business claiming it was related to an illegal immigration roundup.

There’s no confirmation yet from federal authorities.

Moving back to Mississippi from New Orleans, Elli Morris was searching for a warehouse home to suit her artistic personality. With none available, her uncle offered her a temporary home in the building he used as an office, their family’s old ice plant. The plant sparked Elli’s infatuation with her ice history and is the epicenter of her new book Cooling the South: The Block Ice Era. She speaks with Kate on Sounds Good about the her family’s involvement in the ice business and the transformation cheap, manufactured ice brought about.
