There’s a clear link between nutrition and health, and the Humana Foundation is investing in a Louisville program that gets produce to low-income communities. Lisa Gillespie of member station WFPL takes us to a church in Smoketown that is part of the experiment.

A year ago, Washington D.C.'s Capital Area Food Bank — one of the largest in the country — decided to turn away junk food, joining a growing trend of food banks that are trying to offer healthier options to low-income Americans. From soda to chips, the CAFB has reduced the junk food it supplies to its 444 nonprofit partners, including soup kitchens and food pantries, by 84 percent.

Wayne County, New York, is the biggest producer of apples in the Empire State. Yet, in 2013 public school children in the county were being served apples from Washington on their lunch trays. At the end of the lunch period, the lovely, whole Washington apples ended up mostly uneaten in the garbage.

The Kentucky Farms to Food Banks program is adding a new source of protein to help families in need get balanced nutrition. 

There's a small-scale charity movement starting to take hold in neighborhoods across the country. Think of those "little free library" boxes, but with a twist: These are small pantries stocked with free food and personal care items like toothbrushes and diapers for people in need.

They're found near churches, outside businesses and in front of homes. Maggie Ballard, who lives in Wichita, Kan., calls hers a "blessing box."

  The Kentucky Association of Food Banks is reporting an increase of people coming to their food pantries. KAFB executive director Tamara Sandberg said they saw 56% of their member banks report an increase in 2015.  Sandberg said winter is the KAFB's busiest season,  and  that the dropping temperatures force families in need to make some hard choices.

A Kentucky program that increases the amount of produce in food banks is paying farmers more for their crops. The Kentucky Farms to Food Banks program wants to make sure farmers can cover the cost of growing, picking and getting their produce to food banks.

Food banks in Kentucky are preparing for increased demand after new food stamp rules went into effect this week. The changes require able-bodied adults without children to work, volunteer or be in job training 20 hours a week.

Poverty On The Rise In Illinois

The number of Illinois residents relying on food stamps and food banks is rising along with the state’s poverty rate.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn reminds state residents to support food banks during the holiday season and throughout the year. Quinn's office says there are eight food banks around the state and, according to Feeding Illinois, there are more than 1.9 million people in the state who don't have access to nutritious food. Quinn urges people to volunteer at food banks in their communities and donate to them.
