  The Kentucky Association of Food Banks is reporting an increase of people coming to their food pantries. KAFB executive director Tamara Sandberg said they saw 56% of their member banks report an increase in 2015.  Sandberg said winter is the KAFB's busiest season,  and  that the dropping temperatures force families in need to make some hard choices.

A Kentucky program that increases the amount of produce in food banks is paying farmers more for their crops. The Kentucky Farms to Food Banks program wants to make sure farmers can cover the cost of growing, picking and getting their produce to food banks.

Food banks in Kentucky are preparing for increased demand after new food stamp rules went into effect this week. The changes require able-bodied adults without children to work, volunteer or be in job training 20 hours a week.

Poverty On The Rise In Illinois

The number of Illinois residents relying on food stamps and food banks is rising along with the state’s poverty rate.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn reminds state residents to support food banks during the holiday season and throughout the year. Quinn's office says there are eight food banks around the state and, according to Feeding Illinois, there are more than 1.9 million people in the state who don't have access to nutritious food. Quinn urges people to volunteer at food banks in their communities and donate to them. 

Tennessee food banks are weathering a dip in some food supplies as demand remains high. Terry Minton is the commodity administrator for the state Department of Agriculture. Minton says one part of food bank supplies, USDA surplus food, is a bonus that fluctuates with the season and market demand.
