Half of Kentucky’s kindergarten students are unprepared when they enter the public education system. But Children entering Murray Independent Schools fared much better.

According to Kentucky’s new Brigance kindergarten screener results nearly three quarters of children entering elementary school were ready.

ACLU Looking Into Outside Groups in Kentucky Schools

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky has sent open records requests to all 174 public school superintendents in the state seeking information about how outside organizations and people are granted access to elementary schools during school hours to distribute religious or other literature to students.

Toyota gives grant to help early childhood academies

Automaker Toyota is helping Kentucky schools expand an early childhood learning program.

Toyota is giving $115,000 to open 10 more Born Learning programs in the commonwealth. The 10 elementary schools are Hiseville Elementary in Glasgow; Crabbe Elementary in Ashland; Burgin Elementary in Burgin; May Valley Elementary in Prestonsburg; Grandview Elementary in Bellevue; East Calloway Elementary in Murray; H.W. Wilkey Elementary in Leitchfield; Berea Elementary in Berea; Farley Elementary in Paducah; and Boston Elementary in New Haven.

Griffy: Standards Grading System Better for Students, Teachers

A Marshall County School official thinks their new elementary grading system is better for students and teachers, and predicts other schools will pick up the system. Elementary instruction supervisor Abby Griffy says the school system has begun using standards-based grading at Central Elementary. The plan is to include all six district elementary schools next year.

Marshall Co. Schools Eliminates Letter Grades

Marshall County Schools has eliminated letter grades at all six of its public elementary schools. The system is applying a standards-based grading system for the current school year. Instructional supervisor Abby Griffy tells The Paducah Sun all the county's elementary schools will assess student performance by describing levels of comprehension on what is being taught instead of assigning letters based on averaged grades.
