Hopkins County Attorney Todd P’Pool has slapped Sheriff Frank Latham with a cease and desist request after allegedly threatening legal action against the Madisonville Police Department over jurisdiction gripes.

Carroll Running for Third Term as Hopkins Judge-Executive


Hopkins County Judge-Executive Donnie Carroll says he plans to file for re-election by the end of this week. Carroll, a Democrat, says there are several projects he will focus on if given a third term.

“We still would concentrate on our road projects,” Carroll said. “We’ve been fortune enough to build some new facilities for our road departments and our animal shelters and things like that. I still would concentrate on economic development.”

Borden Dairy Announces Closure of Goldenrod Plant in Madisonville


  The Goldenrod dairy plant in Madisonville will close within the next two months, resulting in a loss of 139 jobs.

Hopkins County Judge-Executive Donnie Carroll said the loss will take a toll on families, especially with holidays approaching, but steps have been taken to lessen the impact.

Decreased Coal Severance Forces Hopkins Fiscal Court to Reorganize Budget


A $700,000 shortfall in projected coal severance tax revenues is prompting the Hopkins County Fiscal Court to modify its plans to fund certain county construction projects. 

Kentucky collects a severance tax on coal as it's removed from the ground and sends some of it to coal producing counties.

Rhoads Sponsors Bill to Create New Library Tax Districts


State Senator Jerry Rhoads of Madisonville is sponsoring a bill to create an alternate option for creating a library tax district in counties that do not already have one. The bill allows fiscal courts in those counties to create a library tax district by ordinance. The county’s judge-executive would then appoint a five-member library board to decide the tax rate.

Rhoads says there are several counties including Hopkins and Christian that could benefit from this bill if passed.

Hopkins County Residents Complain of Damaging Donovan Blasts

Some southern Hopkins County residents are complaining about blasts from an explosives company that they say are shaking and damaging their homes. Donovan Commercial Industries manufactures explosives and disposes of them for the military. Judge-executive Donnie Carroll says even though the homes are far from the plant, he has received calls about residents’ photos falling off their walls as result of the blasts.
