State Senator Jerry Rhoads of Madisonville is sponsoring a bill to create an alternate option for creating a library tax district in counties that do not already have one. The bill allows fiscal courts in those counties to create a library tax district by ordinance. The county’s judge-executive would then appoint a five-member library board to decide the tax rate.

Rhoads says there are several counties including Hopkins and Christian that could benefit from this bill if passed.

Some southern Hopkins County residents are complaining about blasts from an explosives company that they say are shaking and damaging their homes. Donovan Commercial Industries manufactures explosives and disposes of them for the military. Judge-executive Donnie Carroll says even though the homes are far from the plant, he has received calls about residents’ photos falling off their walls as result of the blasts.

Hopkins County officials are forming a committee to address funding issues for the Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library.
