A Christian County School bus ran off the road this morning around 6:30 AM, injuring 1 of the 5 students on board.

Christian County School Officials are discussing a possible contingency plan should the school face an influx of students from Fort Campbell.  

The issue came up during a Local Planning Committee meeting concerning long-term facility upgrades last week.

Christian County Schools will close two elementary schools in its district. The school board voted 3-to-2 last night to shutter Lacy and Holiday Elementary Schools in 2015.  

Communications Director Heather Lancaster said the board’s decision was difficult but was based on a needs-to-costs evaluation conducted by the school district’s facilities planning committee.

The Department of Defense Education Activity awarded two school districts near Fort Campbell with a $4.5 million dollar grant to help students in military families.

The grant is being split between school districts in Clarksville-Montgomery County, Tenn., and Christian County, Ky. The grant will fund a liaison at each school district to help connect with and involve parents.

A Jefferson County middle school principal is the new Hopkinsville High School principal. 

24-year education veteran Curtis Higgins is currently the assistant principal at Myers Middle School but will take up principal duties at the start of this school year.

Middle School Students Arrested for Bomb Threat

The Hopkinsville Police Department has arrested two 13-year-olds and charged them with terroristic threatening for writing a bomb threat note at North Drive Middle School. Police arrested the boys yesterday afternoon after a teacher and a student found the note in the school hallway. Both confessed to school staff on scene and again at the Hopkinsville Police Department.

Mary Ann Gemmill started her job as Christian County’s new superintendent of schools at the beginning of July. The 40-year education veteran comes to the district after serving most recently as the chief administrative officer for the Collier County School District in Naples, Fla. Gemmill is a Clinton, Tenn., native, and has worked in several school districts across the Midwestand south. She comes to Christian County Schools as Kentucky is implementing a major push for college and career readiness.

The Christian County Board of Education meets tonight in special session to discuss the appointment and contract approval of a new public school superintendent. The new superintendent will replace the outgoing Brady Link, whose contract was not renewed. the meeting is tonight at 8:30 at the Board of Education's central office.

Christian County Schools will hold a special meeting tomorrow to interview a superintendent candidate.
