Crime statistics show human trafficking is on the rise, including here in the Ohio Valley region. Now some former victims of trafficking are raising awareness, and they've teamed up with some unlikely allies. Nicole Erwin, of the Ohio Valley ReSource, reports.

A Paducah man was arrested and charged Wednesday with the sexual abuse of a minor. McCracken County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint last month that 48-year-old David Averitt had sexually abused a child under the age of 12.

Kentucky may soon join a small but growing number of states enacting laws to protect juvenile victims of the sex trade.  House Bill 3 would restrict authorities' ability to charge minors with offenses related to prostitution and require minors suspected to be involved in prostitution receive social services.

A new law is requiring all Illinois public schools to have sexual assault and abuse awareness programs. Gov. Pat Quinn signed the requirement Thursday, effective immediately. Age appropriate programs will be instituted for pre-K, elementary, middle and high school students. Erin’s Law is named after Illinois native Erin Merryn who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child and is trying to pass the law in all 50 states.
