Chicago saw fewer murders and shootings in the first quarter of 2018 compared with the same time period in 2017, according to new stats released by police officials.

The Chicago Police Department's crime numbers show a "22 percent reduction in murders and a 25 percent reduction in shootings compared to the same period in 2017," a statement from the department said. Citywide, crime is down 15 percent so far this year.

Voters in the Illinois county that includes Chicago have backed the recreational use of marijuana in a nonbinding referendum.

It feels like just yesterday that Chicagoans were told that their prized skyscraper, once the world's tallest building, would no longer be named the Sears Tower.

"Call it the Big Willy," encouraged the CEO of the company that had bought the naming rights. But it's been almost nine years, and while some folks do call it the Willis Tower, few do it with much gusto. And no one calls it Big Willy.

Now Chicagoans are losing the name of another beloved skyscraper: the John Hancock Center.

In the wake of the horrific shooting in Las Vegas this week, the White House faced questions about whether President Trump would support stricter gun legislation.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn't give a definite response to these questions, but her statement showed a White House hesitant to create new regulations.

  Billionaire Chicago businessman J.B. Pritzker says he's still "seriously considering" running for Illinois governor in 2018. The Democrat released a statement Wednesday, after businessman Chris Kennedy announced he's seeking the Democratic nomination to try to unseat Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. Kennedy is the son of Ethel and the late U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy. Pritzker is the brother of Penny Pritzker, who served as Commerce Secretary under President Barack Obama.

 

 

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has reached a long sought-after agreement with two major airlines — United and American — to build a new runway at O'Hare airport. The $1.3 billion project will increase capacity at the congested airfield in hopes of reducing delays.

However, the deal does not include an agreement with the airlines to increase terminal space and add new gates, which some travel industry experts say is critical to reducing congestion at O'Hare, an airport notorious among frequent fliers for delays.

Half the people in Illinois are eager to move to another state, according to a new Gallup poll. The Land of Lincoln has the highest rate of discontentment among the states.

Regional jet service provider SkyWest extended their contract for Chicago jet service with Barkley Regional Airport for another two years. 

A new analysis from the Chicago Tribune finds caseloads for Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigators are too high.  The Tribune reports the biggest trouble spots are in southern Illinois, Cook County, and the counties around Chicago.
