Paducah Power System Public Hearing Tonight for Possible Rate Increase

Paducah Power System residential customers may have another rate increase starting in April.

PPS spokeswoman Andrea Underwood says the proposed residential 7.5 percent jump would begin April 1. This proposed increase follows a 5 percent November increase. PPS is also proposing another rate increase in April 2014 for its residential customers.

CSX Train Derails In Western Kentucky, No Injuries

Emergency officials say a CSX train derailed in Hopkins County Saturday afternoon blocking a road, but nothing was spilled and no one was injured.  When responders arrived at the scene near Morton’s Gap, they found 14 cars overturned, including one tanker.

Paducah Searching For Downtown Marina Operator

Paducah city officials are looking for a private investor to build a marina on its riverfront as a part of a larger riverfront development project. The city is planning to start the first phase of construction on the project in the coming months, but the completion will depend on whether the city can find a business partner to operate a marina.

MCCH Announces Layoffs and Cost Cutting Measures

Murray Calloway County Hospital is laying off 28 employees and implementing other cost cutting measures this week. MCCH President Jerry Penner says in a press release that the cuts are a response to a $7.5 million shortfall in patient volume since last October and a decline in Medicaid reimbursements. Penner says the cuts are regrettable but necessary to keep the hospital running.

Paducah and McCracken County Aid Construction of Call Center

The Paducah City Commission and McCracken County Fiscal Court will help TeleTech Holdings build a new customer service call center. City Manager Jeff Pederson said the two have pledged $1.35 million to help the Colorado-based company construct the building, and Paducah Economic Development committed to $250,000.  Pederson said the city and county have decided to aid the company because its business will bring about 450 new jobs to the area.
