The Tennessee Supreme Court has named Gov. Bill Haslam's top legal advisor, Herbert Slatery, the state's next attorney general. 

The high court made the announcement this morning in Nashville. 

Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper visited Fort Campbell Thursday to promote a new consumer protection guide for military personnel and their consumer affairs counselors.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam issued an executive order creating a judicial nominating panel to fill vacancies left after fellow Republican legislators let the Judicial Nominating Commission expire in June.


The Tennessee Department of Children's Services said it will charge close to $35,000 to produce public records of children who died, or nearly died, in the past 11 months after having some contact with DCS.  The agency announced the fee Wednesday after the Tennessean requested files from July 2012 to May 2013.

An estimated 37,000 Tennessee borrowers might be eligible for payment under a $25 billion national mortgage foreclosure settlement. Eligible borrowers will receive claim forms in the mail this month. Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper urges those who receive the forms to complete and return them by the Jan. 18 deadline. Those eligible include people who lost their homes between 2008 and 2011 to five major mortgage services, which include Ally/GMC, Bank of America, Citi, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo. The mailings will go out through Oct. 12.
