Murray's Panhandling Ban Shelved For Now

A contentious panhandling ordinance in Murray has temporarily been shelved in the wake of a national ruling.

In a city council meeting Thursday night, City Attorney Warren Hopkins said he recommends holding off on such legislation to prevent a clash with federal courts.

Currently, there are no restrictions on panhandling in Murray while surrounding Bowling Green, Hopkinsville and Paducah have all passed bans.

Project engineers behind the possible modifications to Murray's busy 16th street have posted graphics of the alternate options online.

Project managers are also still seeking public comments on the project with a survey that be accessed here.

With classes already underway, Murray State University President Bob Davies stopped by the WKMS studios to  give an update on leadership staffing changes that occurred over the summer as well as a look forward at future and current construction projects.

A former director of finance for the city of Murray will take on the same role in an interim capacity following Alan Lanier's resignation last week.

Don Leet served as finance director from 1990 to 2007 under four different mayors. Leet retired only last month from his position as finance officer at Murray engineering firm Bacon Farmer Workman. Mayor Jack Rose, accounting manager Kim Wyatt and human resources director Cathy Morris are handling the job’s duties until Leet’s retirement paperwork is sorted out in Frankfort.

Caution signs at crosswalks address a growing issue in Murray:  traffic and pedestrians using 16th Street.  Murray State's Chief Facilities Officer and Director of Facilities Design and Construction Kim Oatman presented a study of the situation to the Board of Regents at its most recent meeting.
