The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

Summer Party at the Murray Art Guild

Sounds Good features three guests involved in the Murray Art Guild Party this Friday night: Ceramicists Wayne Bates and Cooper Levering, and Debi Danielson, the Guild’s Executive Director. MFA Reading Series Begins Saturday with Alumni Poet Larry O. Dean

Chicago-based teacher, poet, singer, songwriter Larry O. Dean is an alumnus of the MFA program and opens its summer readings program at 3 p.m. Saturday in Clara M. Eagle Gallery on the 6th floor of Doyle Fine Arts.  His latest book is titled Brief Nudity.  He tells Kate Lochte how being a Poet-In-Residence in Chicago Public Schools is good for his writing practice and shares a few of his "people" poems.

Community Initiatives at the Murray-Calloway County United Way

Kate Lochte speaks with Aaron Dail, Executive Director of the Murray-Calloway County United Way, on Sounds Good. They talk about the transformation of the United Way involving community conversations and community change, and efforts being made on a local level. Three of their current focus areas are educational attainment, income stability for families, and healthy living/healthy lifestyles. The Paducah Wastelanders Summertime 2013 Exhibit opens with a reception Saturday, June 22, from 5-8PM and closes with a reception Saturday, June 29, from 5-8PM at 950 Park Avenue, Paducah. Exhibiting artists include E.J. Abell, Mark Donham, Nancy Flowers, Juanita Gilliam, Kristi Hanson, LaNelle Mason, Jane Viterisi, Ginger Adams, Bill Ford, and Joe Viterisi. The Mayfield/Graves County Art Guild hosts artwork depicting botanical subjects in painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture. Town & Gown is a partnership between the university and the city of Murray, geared towards facilitating the discussion and opporunity for collaborative events, philanthropy, and service. 50 Years Later: Reflections on President Kennedy's Berlin Speech

On this day 50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy gave his famous "ich bin ein Berliner" speech to West Berlin, underlying support for the West 22 months after Soviet-supported East Germany erected the Berlin Wall. Commentator and Murray State History Professor Dr. Brian Clardy reflects on this statement of US policy and its impact on the Cold War.

A few days ago in my American History class, I lectured on the early years of the Cold War of the late 1940s and early 1950s. With rapt attention, young Racer Nation listened to me drone on and on about the Berlin Airlift and the fact that the city would become what I called a “pregnant symbol” of the U.S.-Soviet conflict.

Music @ MAC: Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three this Friday

Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three headline the next Music @ MAC, the music performance series at Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah. Also playing is the Wheelhouse Rousters (Nathan Blake Lynn, Josh Coffey, Eddy Coffey). Performance is Friday, June 28, doors open at 6 and show starts at 7. Tickets are $15.
