The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Ryan Walker Survives (and Completes) the Spartan Death Race

Murray man Ryan Walker was among few finishing the Spartan Death Race this summer. The annual event challenges physical and mental limits in a 48 hour adventure race. According to their website, roughly 90% of participants fail to complete the race. He speaks with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good about his experience, what specific events were like, how he pulled through, and whether he'd do it again.

An Update on the Christian County Cares Community Perception Survey

Kate Lochte gets an update on the Christian County Cares project and the results of the 2013 Community Perception Survey with Yasamin Ausenbaugh, Director the program. The survey began in 2005, a detailed project aimed toward community growth. They talk about the goals from the 2010 plan, including developing a better workforce and growing the economy to grow wealth and reduce economy and the response from those goals and how community feedback can continue to improve the area. Puppies Sound Good: Meet Gus and Lola

Two very sweet puppies came up to the station today, Lola and Gus are shih tzu / boxer mixes, sister and brother, in need of a loving home from the Humane Society of Calloway County. Lola is the fluffy white one and Gus is the scrappy brown and white one. Even though they are only 10 weeks old, they are very friendly and approached every staff member, eager to be pet. Their foster mom says they are energetic and currently live in a house with a several large dogs and do just fine playing with them. They are estimated to be about 30 to 50 pounds when fully grown and are working on their house training, crate training, and basic obedience.

Grammar Expert Jeanne Clements on the Verbal Education Training Tool

Kate Lochte speaks with a grammar expert, Jeanne Clements on Sounds Good. She’s the creator of Verbal Education, a vocabulary training tool for taking college entrance exams. According to verbaleducation.com, the program is a method utilizing mnemonics for vocabulary with high-frequency in SATs and ACTs. The methods include visualization, associative memory, morphemic analysis, and more. Clements has a background of 25 years as an educator and currently directs the Association of Language Arts Teachers of America and is Vice-President of Intstructivision, Inc. Meet Craig Felker, Christian Pop/Rock Singer with Hearts of Saints and Paducah Native

Sounds Good welcomes Paducah native Craig Felker. Felker is the front man for the Christian pop/rock group Hearts of Saints performing on the riverfront this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. He speaks with Kate Lochte about growing up in Paducah, how his faith has played a role in his style of music and how music has strengthened his faith. The Christian pop/rock group, also comprised of Jason Killebrew, Jesse Grisham, and Joel Purdy, plays on Wilson Stage. The concert is free to the public. Watson & Robinson Collection Offers Glimpse into African-American History in Hopkinsville

Kate Lochte speaks with Louise Jones of the Kentucky Historical Society about the Watson & Robinson Families Collection on exhibit at the Hopkinsville-Christian County Public Library. The collection features 27 handwritten letters detailing family history information and offers a glimpse into the history of African-American communities in Hopkinsville. A free community event, made possible by the Kentucky Historical Society and the African American Genealogy Group of Kentucky, will be held July 20 at the library. Sessions include open-sharing sessions about the letters, and a special panel discussion on researching African-American roots. MFA Reading Wednesday Night Brings This American Life Essayist to Murray

Murray State's MFA Reading Series' fourth and final visiting author Davy Rothbart has achieved celebrity status for contributions to This American Life and for being interviewed by David Letterman and appreciated by Jon Stewart. This year a musical titled Found is premiering, based on Rothbart's decade of producing Found Magazine. He's also an essayist and memoirist. Some say he's a modern day Jack Kerouac for the rap generation. Rothbart presents Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Clara Eagle Gallery of Doyle Fine Arts on campus, a reading that's open to all. Kate Lochte asked Davy Rothbart about his work.

Celebrate Independence Day at The Homeplace

Wicker Poetry Ponders Pop Culture Icons

The 2012 publication of "Maybe the Saddest Thing" gave poet Marcus Wicker more national attention. His earning the 2011 Ruth Lilly Fellowship brought him a $15,000 prize. He teaches writing at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville and reads from his works this Sunday at 7 p.m. at Murray State as a visiting artist in the MFA Summer Reading series. The reading is open to all in the Clara M. Eagle Gallery, sixth floor Doyle Fine Arts. Kate Lochte met Mr. Wicker by phone.

Daughter of the West Adds New Voice to Literature of the Region

Soft-spoken, wide-eyed author Claire Vaye Watkins packs a punch with odd, heart-rending stories set in Nevada and collected in the book Battleborn, which won the 2012 Story Prize, the 2013 Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a Silver Pen Award from the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame.  It was also named a Best Book of 2012 by the San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, Time Out New York and Flavorwire, and a Best Short Story Collection by NPR.org.  Last year the National Book Foundation named Watkins one of the "5 under 35" best writers.  Claire Vaye Watkins teaches at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and her reading for the Murray State MFA program this Saturday at 7 p.m. is open to all. Kate Lochte has conversation with the author.
