About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

Photographs and Videos of Goldfields land in Australia Comprise New Eagle Gallery Show

Artist Dawn Roe divides her time between Asheville, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida where she serves as Assistant Professor of Art at Rollins College. Her studio practice involves the singular and combined use of still photographs and digital video. An exhibit of her work titled "Goldfields" opens tonight (September 5) at Murray State's Eagle Gallery in the Doyle Fine Arts Building. Kate Lochte has more about it with Ms. Roe. CASA by the Lakes Fundraises with Pirates vs. Ninjas Fun Walk/Run and Chili Challenge

CASA by the Lakes Executive Director Lindsey Harlan joins us on Sounds Good. There’s A Pirates v. Ninjas Fun Walk/Run and Chili Challenge at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park on September 28th. It raises funds for CASA’s safe placement of abused and neglected children in Calloway and Marshall Counties. Pick a side: Pirate or Ninja, dress up the family and have a good time for a good cause. Registration for the Fun Walk and Run begins at 9:30 am at Kentucky Dam Village Beach Parking Lot ($8 for individuals in advance, $10 at event. Groups of 4 or more - call 270-761-0164 for discount). The Walk/Run begins at 10:30 am, with prizes for best costumes. The Chili Challenge will be at Kentucky Dam Village Lakeview Pavilion (behind the Convention Center). $5 suggested donation per bowl, $2 for each extra. Registration fees for teams is $25. Autumn at LBL's Elk & Bison Prairie

As we move into fall it’s a good time to hear about the environment of the Elk & Bison Prairie and what the animals are doing now. We visit with Land Between the Lakes Wildlife Technician Curtis Fowler for an update on the animals in the preserve. The 700-acre enclosure is home to elk, bison, and several other animals with free-roaming access. Visitors can enjoy the area on a 3.5-mile loop road, with interpretive spots along the way to learn more about their ecosystem. Click here for more about the Elk & Bison Prairie.

West Kentucky Community College’s Clemens Fine Arts Center Director Gail Robinson Butler joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good. This Friday (September 6), the Center’s Arts in Focus Series opens with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players “I’ve got a Little Twist.” The show combines Gilbert and Sullivan music with some of Broadway’s favorite tunes. Paducah Symphony Orchestra Season Opens with Tchaikovsky

Paducah Symphony Orchestra Maestro Raffaele Ponti visits with us on Sounds Good. The Orchestra’s season opens Saturday (September 7) at 7:30 p.m. at the Carson Center, featuring soloist Ilya Kaler performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Kaler was born in Moscow, Russia and is the only violinist to have won gold medals at each of the three most prestigious international competitions. Former Kentucky State Senator Greg Higdon, now President and CEO of the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers, seeks policy solutions around the growing workforce needs of manufacturers. These needs include recruiting more students into workforce development programs; developing a curriculum spanning secondary and postsecondary education to produce a more work-ready adult graduating and more. The Fancy Farm native’s career trajectory has put him in Frankfort for work, but Higdon returns to western Kentucky each weekend and he visits Kate on Sounds Good to talk about his latest progress.

Eating Breakfast = Healthier Students, Better Students

Southeast Dairy Association's nutrition affairs program manager Laura Marbury says new research shows that the most important lesson of the day for better students could be eating breakfast. Marbury is a registered dietitian, responsible for implementing nutrition programs for health professionals, educators and consumers throughout Tennessee and Kentucky. Prior to joining the Southeast Dairy Association, she served as a medical nutrition therapist at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where she provided diet recommendations and education to oncology, obstetric and pediatric patients. She and Kate Lochte discuss breakfast eating strategies.

Murray Police on National Drinking & Driving Prevention Effort

Each year, nearly 10,000 people die on the road due to drunk driving, which is the equivalent of 20 jumbo jets crashing each year and killing all aboard. In order to stop this deadly epidemic, law enforcement in every state and most US towns and cities will be cracking down on drunk driving through Labor Day. Murray Police Department Crime Prevention Sergant speaks with Chad Lampe about the crackdown.

50 Years Later: The Cultural Significance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream Speech"

On this day 50 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech to a crowd of over 200,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Commentator and Murray State History Professor Dr. Brian Clardy reflects on this defining moment of the Civil Rights Movement, and it's cultural significance then and 50 years later.
