About The Show

The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

Puppies Sound Good: Meet Fairway

Meet Fairway, a boxer mix up for adoption at the Humane Society of Calloway County. He's a very friendly boy, who loved meeting and being pet by everyone at WKMS, he was very mild-mannered and had his tail wagging the entire time in the studio! His foster dad says he was found as a stray on the fairway at a local golf course. He gets along with other dogs and seems to do well with cats and kids. Fairway is approximately one year old and weighs 44 pounds. Read more about Fairway on his Petfinder page.

World Premiere of Ciach's Third Sonata Thursday

Murray State Music Department assistant professor, pianist, composer Brian Ciach premieres his Third Sonata Thursday night at 7:30 in Farrell Recital Hall. Farrell Recital Hall is on the third floor of Price Doyle Fine Arts. The performance is open to all. He performs the music and speaks about it during the 50 minute piece. On 'The Rise and Fall of West Ky Democratic Politics'

There are those of us, of sufficient vintage, who can recall people saying, “If you want to vote in Kentucky, you register as a Democrat.”  That always seemed to be a little bit more true here in western Kentucky, the birthplace of Alben Barkley, Wendell Ford, Ned Breathitt, Ruby Laffoon, and Julian Carroll. Of course, western Kentucky is more competitive today politically, but one has to wonder how our part of the Commonwealth became a Democratic bastion in the first place. Dr. George Humphreys is the director of Madisonville Community College’s Muhlenberg campus and an alumnus of Murray State’s History Department.  He’s the author of The Democratic Rock of Gibraltar: The Rise and Fall of Western Kentucky Democratic Politics Since the New Deal, slated to come out next spring.  He’s on the line today to speak with us about it.

'Dine with the Dearly Departed' at Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre

Southern Kentucky Independent Theatre's Paul Forshee describes the group's September 20th and 21st "Dining with the Dearly Departed" event. It's a new format this year: Actors travel through time portraying owners of acreage now called RB Farms; it all happens under a large wedding style tent with a catered dinner to boot on September 20 and 21 at RB Farms near Kenny Rogers' house on Old Hopkinsville Road near Gracey. A cast of nearly twenty actors will depict nearly a dozen families through history, all whom shared the same farm (the current owners will be portraying themselves.) Merryman House Reaches Out to End Domestic Abuse

Merryman House Executive Director Mary Foley heads up a team offering residency and outreach services to meet the needs of victims of intimate partner abuse and their dependents as they strive to live free of violence in their home. It’s not unimaginable and Kate Lochte find out more with Foley on Sounds Good. Spencers Theatre of Illusion in Greenville Saturday

Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall in Greenville presents Spencers Theatre of Illusion Saturday at 7 p.m. But many hours before -- Kevin and Cindy Spencer's crew will have unloaded a 65 foot trailer truck with all of the set pieces it takes to bring magic to life. Spencers Theatre of Illusion travels worldwide. In 2009 they received magic's highest honor, The Merlin Award for International Magicians of the Year, joining the ranks of Henning, Copperfield and Penn and Teller. Photographs and Videos of Goldfields land in Australia Comprise New Eagle Gallery Show

Artist Dawn Roe divides her time between Asheville, North Carolina and Winter Park, Florida where she serves as Assistant Professor of Art at Rollins College. Her studio practice involves the singular and combined use of still photographs and digital video. An exhibit of her work titled "Goldfields" opens tonight (September 5) at Murray State's Eagle Gallery in the Doyle Fine Arts Building. Kate Lochte has more about it with Ms. Roe. CASA by the Lakes Fundraises with Pirates vs. Ninjas Fun Walk/Run and Chili Challenge

CASA by the Lakes Executive Director Lindsey Harlan joins us on Sounds Good. There’s A Pirates v. Ninjas Fun Walk/Run and Chili Challenge at Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park on September 28th. It raises funds for CASA’s safe placement of abused and neglected children in Calloway and Marshall Counties. Pick a side: Pirate or Ninja, dress up the family and have a good time for a good cause. Registration for the Fun Walk and Run begins at 9:30 am at Kentucky Dam Village Beach Parking Lot ($8 for individuals in advance, $10 at event. Groups of 4 or more - call 270-761-0164 for discount). The Walk/Run begins at 10:30 am, with prizes for best costumes. The Chili Challenge will be at Kentucky Dam Village Lakeview Pavilion (behind the Convention Center). $5 suggested donation per bowl, $2 for each extra. Registration fees for teams is $25.
