The music on Sounds Good is a mix of legacy artists who are still making great music now (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt) deep cuts from classic artists (The Band, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, REM) great contemporary artists who don' t receive commercial airplay (Neko Case, Wilco, Jack White, Darrell Scott, The Black Keys) and those who defy the boundaries of categorization (Punch Brothers, Bela Fleck, Ry Cooder, Bill Frisell, Justin Townes Earle). You'll also get a bit of World music, Blues, Soul/R&B, Reggae and Jazz.

Additionally, you'll hear interviews with newsmakers and community leaders, live music from some of our region's best musicians, our community events calendar and more.

Jewelry & Metalsmithing at Paducah School of Art

Paul Aho, Dean of the Paducah School of Art, a division of West Kentucky Community and Technical College, outlines a new program in Jewelry and Metalsmithing and new studio space for the program, along with new studio space for ceramics, in Madison Hall in Paducah's Lowertown. Kate Lochte spoke with Aho via phone on Sounds Good.

For some, singing is a passion. For some it’s a career. For others, it’s something to do in shower, or in the car with the radio full blast. Now Murray has a group devoted to the vocal pursuit. The Murray Choral Society is a new organization dedicated to the study and performance of choral music. 

WKMS Sounds Good Cookie Bake Off (Recipes Included)

The WKMS Sounds Good Cookie Contest Bake-Off was Saturday, September 15, 2012 in the food preparation laboratories of Murray State's Nutrition, Dietetics and Foot Management Program. Five finalists baked. Judges Kathy Timmons, Anne Newberry and Cadelia Turpin selected winners as follows: 1st: Patricia Carrico's French Cream Wafers; 2nd: Barbara Cox's Double Chocolate Dream Cookies; and 3rd: Jessica Evans' Macadamia Cookies with Lemon and White Chocolate. The top three cookie bakers received Gift Certificates from Elements of Murray. All finalists received autographed copies of Lynne Rosetto Kasper's book A Summertime Grilling Guide from the Splendid Table. WKMS received 23 recipe entries in its first cookie contest.

Ivan Potter is a futurist and publisher of the West Kentucky Journal.  Mr. Potter has advised Kentucky governors and American presidents on rural development and intergovernmental relations.  Todd Hatton speaks with Mr. Potter about a recent article of his published in the Journal that looks at the effects of the recent drought on our region in terms of hard numbers.

Clinton, Kentucky native Jessica Byassee joined Kate Lochte in the WKMS studio on Sounds Good to share her experience as an environment extension volunteer for two-years in Tanzania. Jess was a student worker at WKMS while completing her degree from Murray State.

Lindsey Harlan Speaks on Helping Children Through CASA

Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASAs are volunteers who are trained to help in cases of child abuse and neglect. Volunteers observe children first hand and report back to the court to help judges make the best decision in family court cases. Kentucky has 2o CASA programs. In 2010, they served a little over 2,000 children. Funding for these programs comes from donations and grants, and directly contributes to how many children they may serve.

Jennifer P. Brown knows how interesting, quirky, terrible and inspiring life in rural western Kentucky can be. Brown has been on the Kentucky New Era newspaper staff for over 20 years, and currently serves as the paper’s opinion editor. She’s covered a little bit of everything, from criminals to tornadoes to political races to homeless folks. She’s also a Hopkinsville native with strong family ties to the region.
