A group of public employees rallied with retirees and teachers in Mayfield Thursday evening to protest the pension reform bill.
Organizer and elementary school teacher Charlotte Goddard said the event was intended for people who can’t join the protests in Frankfort more than 200 miles away.
“Even on the western side of the state, though we may not have a huge representation in Frankfort right now, that we still wanted to have our voices heard and let them know that we have opposition to Senate Bill One and House Bill 200,” Goddard said.
SB1 is intended to address Kentucky's pension crisis and HB200 is the House version of the proposed state budget.
Teachers around the commonwealth have rallied against proposed changes to the pension system that include reductions to certain benefits and moving some to less-generous plans. Republican lawmakers say the changes are necessary to fix one of the worst-funded pension systems in the country.
