[Video, Slideshow] Old Eggner's Ferry Bridge Brought Down in Explosive Demolition

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contractors carried out the explosive demolition of the four main spans of the old Eggner’s Ferry Bridge Monday morning.

Traffic was shut down on the new bridge for more than an hour during the demolition. KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says inspectors had to check the new bridge for damage, and then massive cranes on barges began to move into the area to pick up the old bridge’s remains from the bottom of the lake.

“Now that the steel is in the lake, the contractor has 24 hours to clear the steel out of the main channel area of the new bridge and then that will allow towboat traffic to resume at the site.”

Todd says recreational traffic should also resume in that area in the next day.

More than 2,000 people showed up on the shores of Kentucky Lake for the blast, which took place shortly before 7 a.m.

The two remaining spans will be pulled down by cranes in the next few weeks. Todd says the new bridge should open to four-lane traffic in August or September
