Update: Statement from Judge Executive Larry Elkins added.
An attempt to fill a vacancy on the Calloway County Library Board failed in a fiscal court meeting Tuesday night.
Judge Executive Larry Elkins proposed filling Teresa Betts’ open seat with Ann Landini, but the magistrates did not accept or second the motion.
District 1 Magistrate Eddie Clyde Hale said he chose to not accept the motion because the court did not receive a requested application for Landini to see where she stands on “certain issues” surrounding the library. Hale would not specify what those issues were. He said he believes the library needs an expansion, but doesn’t agree with a plan that would “put taxpayers in debt,” where the library would seek loans to fund such expansion.
Statement from Calloway Co. Judge Executive:
"In making an appointment to the Calloway County Public Library Board and in accordance with KRS 173.730, a Judge-Executive is required to select an individual from a list of two names provided to the County by the Kentucky Department of Libraries. Before making my selection, I sent a questionnaire to the two persons nominated by the Kentucky Department of Libraries. Both nominees declined to complete the questionnaire."
Elkins said he's not sure about the court's next steps.
