Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Thursday Update

Tuesday afternoon update: Following an autopsy, preliminary results show McClure died of two gunshot wounds to the torso. Toxicology report is pending. McClure had been pronounced dead Monday at Jackson Purchase Medical Center.

Monday evening update:

Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting death involving a Fulton Police Department officer on Monday.

Kentucky State Police Lt. Kyle Nall led a press conference Monday evening. According to Null, police responded to multiple 911 calls involving a disorderly man smashing vehicles with a pole Monday early afternoon in downtown Fulton.

At least two police officers arrived and found Charles Christopher McClure, a 43-year-old white man from Union City, smashing vehicles with a three to four foot pole and a knife (which may have been attached to the pole according to some witnesses). Nall did not know whether or not the pole was metal or wood.  Officers got the call around 12:25 and the shots were fired around 12:35.

Nall said when the subject did not comply with the orders, an officer shot and killed the subject. The man had damaged about five vehicles, including two police vehicles. He would not comment on whether or not the subject had a criminal record. He wouldn't say whether or not the man said anything on the scene and said he was unaware of any video footage of the incident.

The name of the officer was not released. The officer is unharmed and is in a debriefing period. The officer is pending a clearing of wrong-doing and a determination based on the evidence if the shooting is justified. The autopsy is at 9 a.m. at the coroner's officer in Madisonville.

Eyewitnesses are being interviewed and the investigation is underway involving a critical response team from Henderson.  Lab reports could take up to three to six months.
