TVA Seeks Comment on Coal Ash Storage Facility at Paducah Site

TVA

The Tennessee Valley Authority is proposing to build a facility to remove and recirculate water used in coal ash management at a Paducah area site. TVA is seeking public comment on potential environmental impacts of this facility at the Shawnee Fossil Plant.

The ‘dewatering facility’ for bottom ash is part the electric utility’s effort to convert from wet to dry storage of ash and other coal combustion residual products. The facility would also include a recirculation system to recycle the water used in moving ash back into the powerhouse. Dry ash would then be stored on site.

Comments on a draft can be submitted online at tva.com/nepa, by email to arfarless@tva.gov or written letter to Ashley Farless, Tennessee Valley Authority, 1101 Market St. BR 4A, Chattanooga, TN, 37402.

The Shawnee plant is located on nearly 1,700 acres along the Ohio River 10 miles northwest of Paducah. The plant generates enough power for approximately 540,000 homes.
