A transgender Madisonville North Hopkins High School Student is holding a rally tomorrow in downtown Madisonville calling for transgender rights.

Ashley Marks says the rally comes after the high school asked transgender students to use a handicap bathroom instead of the one of their choice. Additionally, State Senator C.B. Embry is behind a bill calling for students to use the restroom corresponding to their anatomical gender.

“Well, that’s we’re kind of opposing against because it’s not passed yet and we’re trying to get people to notice how many people don’t agree with that and how it affects transgender students,” Marks said.

Embry has said he filed the bill after receiving a draft from the Kentucky Family Foundation and that he wants it to start a conversation about the issue.

The rally starts at noon in front of the Hopkins County courthouse.

Whitney grew up listening to Car Talk to and from her family’s beach vacation each year, but it wasn’t until a friend introduced her to This American Life that radio really grabbed her attention. She is a recent graduate from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., where she studied journalism. When she’s not at WKMS, you can find her working on her backyard compost pile and garden, getting lost on her bicycle or crocheting one massive blanket.
