Sun Prints, Balloon Bracelets, More at Yeiser Art Center Family Day, Saturday

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

In conjunction with Showcase Paducah this weekend, the Yeiser Art Center downtown hosts Family Day, featuring sun prints, balloon bracelets and more along with a guided tour of the international exhibition currently on display: Art Through the Lens. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte speaks with Executive Director Lindsey Maestri about the event, a tour of some of the photography and what's up next at the Yeiser.

Family Day runs in conjunction with Showcase Paducah, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids can make sun prints, a type of photography with light sensitive paper that changes color in the sun. This ties into Art Through The Lens, the photography exhibit on display. Maestri says close to 900 entries from eight countries and 40 states were juried down to 73 pieces for the show, with the very best on display in the gallery. Some of the stand out pieces include a blurred portrait with Braille providing crispness and clarity, a black and white portrait of rustic houses in Montana and whimsical work depicting family playfulness.

Later this summer, LowerTown artist Paul Lorenz exhibits his work on rice paper from his residency in China. Local folk artist Gay Speirbhain shows her paintings this autumn, a Members Show ends the year. Maestri says she's working on a new schedule for 2016 that will include perennial favorites like Teen Spirit, Fantastic Fibers and Art Through the Lens.

Yeiser Art Center is free to visit Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their summer hours include Noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
