Southeast Missouri Feels M4.0 Earthquake

Missouri’s bootheel felt a magnitude 4.0 earthquake last night. The United States Geological Survey reported the initial shock hit around 10:51 PM about 2 miles south of Steele in the far southeast corner of the state. There have been no reports of damage.

Steele is located in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. According to the U-S-G-S, people feel small earthquakes in this area about twice a year. Last night’s quake was felt as far north as Carbondale, Illinois and as far south as Memphis, Tennessee.
