Metropolis, Illinois – In late January the City of Metropolis discharged 4.5 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the Ohio River. It was the longest recorded overflow, more than 67 hours, since the city began monitoring the discharge a year and a half ago. It's not an isolated incident: last year the city recorded 46 overflows. Jacque Day paid a visit to Metropolis and brings us this report about the strain on the city's century-old drainage system, and what they're aiming to do about it.
