A newly reformed minor league baseball team in Paducah kicks-off their season Saturday, June 4 at Brooks stadium.
The Paducah Chiefs began in 1903 and the team was divided and reunited until 1955.
Paducah Chiefs’ general manager, Greg McKeel says there’s a lot of “local flavor” when it comes to the players, with nearly half of them from Paducah and the rest from surrounding communities. McKeel says he hopes to fill all 1600 seats in tomorrow’s inaugural game.
“The stadium was built in 1948 for the Paducah Chiefs to play in so here we are 60 years later bringing the chiefs back to play in the stadium that was built for them," Brooks says.
The 24-player team plays in the Ohio Valley League. The Chiefs face the Madisonville Miners at 6:15.
Due to the team’s reformation earlier this year, American Legion Post 31 had to give up their team’s use of Brooks Stadium. Legion member Hardy Gentry says his team had been using the space since 1938. He says they’ll move their team to Heath High School and wishes the Chiefs good luck in their season.
