RATIO Architects Present Plans for Paducah City Hall

Lance Dennee

Paducah city officials are deciding between rehabilitating and replacing City Hall.

RATIO Architects completed and presented the schematic designs last night to the city commission. Architect Rob Proctor says rehabilitating City Hall would cost around $18 million and a new four-story building would be about $18.5 million.

“We’re sort of celebrating government through the vehicle of design and celebrating the kind of work that you all do through the proper placement of the commission space,” Proctor said.

Proctor says the next step is for the city of Paducah to decide which path is more appropriate, a new building or renovation.

Rehabilitation involves stabilizing the existing City Hall canopy, improving seismic stability and other mechanical elements. The City Commission chambers would be relocated to the first floor, and new features like glass dividers would be installed to facilitate cooperation between departments as well as to increase transparency for visitors.

The new building route would begin with construction on city-owned property on Clark Street. The exterior features several materials including glass, stone and metal panels. Of the $18.5 million projected cost, about $590,000 would go toward stabilizing the current facility until a new owner or purpose could be ascertained.
