Petition Calls for Change to Caldwell County Fiscal Court Meeting Times

C. Bedford Crenshaw

A petition is circulating that urges Caldwell County judge-executive Ellen Dunning to move the fiscal court’s monthly meeting from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Jeff Simms, a Princeton banker, started the Change.org petition and says Caldwell County residents who might not be able to attend the morning meetings deserve more access to their local government.

“I just want to have a little bit better feel for what’s going on in city and county government," Simms said.

The petition currently has more than 70 signatures with a goal of 100. Dunning, in her first term as judge-executive, says she will consider the issue if it’s brought before the fiscal court, but is leery of online petitions. She said she was concerned it might contain signatures from people outside Caldwell County.

Dunning said Tuesday morning's regular meeting had about 10 members of the public in attendance.

Simms said he plans to run for county magistrate in the next election cycle.
