NWS: Ohio River Counties will be Hit Hardest by Weekend Flash Floods

NWS

The National Weather Service in Paducah says several rounds of heavy rainfall and flash flooding will impact the listening area this weekend.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect over southeast Missouri and a line along just north of the Ohio River running Saturday morning through Sunday night.

“It will probably start this afternoon or this evening, but we really don’t expect flooding issues before Saturday," said NWS Meteorologist Kelly Cooper. "I expect the heaviest rains will probably come Sunday, with the better chance Sunday-Sunday night for the best chances of flooding. And again Monday and Tuesday we’ll have another round of really heavy rains.”

That line along the Ohio could see up to 6 inches come Monday morning, with areas south heading towards Murray seeing 1 to 3 inches.  Another round of heavy rain expected Tuesday through Wednesday will increase those totals.

“Now, the reason this is happening is because of a cold front moving into the area and you’ve got a low down in east Texas into the Gulf states, that’s gonna vent or push moisture up into this area to interact with that cold front," said Cooper. "One of the things we look at is the amount of moisture available in the atmosphere compared to what the normal is, and we’re over 200 percent of normal right now... and actually that could push up to 250% above normal.”

Cooper says they’re not concerned with wind gusts or thunderstorms in this event, as flooding in low-lying creeks, streams and rivers and water over rural and urban roadways will be the biggest hazards.
