Media Release: WKMS Announces “Battle of the Bands” Contest

Murray State’s public radio service, 91.3 WKMS FM has announced its 2nd annual “Battle of the Bands” contest, continuing its ongoing support of bands and singer-songwriters as yet without recording contracts. The Battle of the Bands entry deadline is March 1, 2015. The winner will be chosen after a concert of finalists at Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah on March 26, 2015. This year’s Grand Prize is a Music Promotion Package valued at over $3,000.

Nearly 40 bands submitted entries for last year’s Battle of the Bands. The finalists’ event at Maiden Alley was sold out and included the Drunken Poets, The Evan Webb Band, Float as a Ghost and Gideon’s Rifle performing. Paducah’s Gideon’s Rifle was voted the 2014 winner.

To enter this year’s contest each band (group of 1 or more) must submit one song to WKMS via: mp3 emailed to msu.wkms@murraystate.edu or CD mailed to 2018 University Station, Murray, KY 42071. Please include band name, names of band members, address of band contact, phone number and email contact, and any other information of particular interest. A signed release form must accompany the entry (more information here).

Songs or instrumentals must be: Original (no covers); Radio-quality recordings; FCC clean; different from previous submission if band entered last year; from bands without professional recording contracts.

WKMS facilities or personnel will not be available to record entries. No one who is currently employed by WKMS may enter. Previous winners ineligible to win again.

Entrants will be narrowed down by a committee of WKMS music hosts and our previous “Battle of the Bands” winners, followed by online judging by WKMS listeners. The finalists must be available to play three songs in a live “Battle of the Bands” at Maiden Alley Cinema on Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

The Grand Prize Promotion Package valued over $3,000 includes the opportunity to perform a “Live Lunch” on the WKMS midday program Sounds Good, WKMS on-air underwriting spots to promote upcoming shows or CD releases, a full (1) year slide at Maiden Alley Cinema for your band, the opportunity to perform as a headliner at a “Music at MAC” event and more.
