McConnell Refuses to Comment on Presidential Race

Rob Canning, WKMS

As a growing number of Republican leaders give up on the party's presidential nominee, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking a different tack: He's ignoring Donald Trump.

During a Q&A with local business leaders in Danville, Kentucky on Monday, McConnell told the audience not to ask him about the presidential race. He said anyone who came to hear his speech to get his thoughts about the presidential race "might as well go ahead and leave."

While McConnell is not on the ballot in November, he is working to preserve the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate. Some incumbent Republican senators, including Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, have pulled their support for Trump after a video surfaced of him making abusive comments about women.

In a news release last week, McConnell called Trump's comments "unacceptable."
