Louisville businessman Matt Bevin will be the next governor of Kentucky, just the third Republican to hold the office in 65 years. Bevin defeated Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway despite poll results showing Conway with a five point lead a week before the election.
“And I’ll tell you I’m a Republican and have always been a Republican and I’m proud for the fact that this is a great night for the Republican Party in the state of Kentucky," Bevin says.
In his concession speech, Conway said he was ready to spend more time with his daughters, “Tonight was not the result we had hoped for, but it is the result we will respect.”
Bevin survived a four-way primary election, winning by just 83 votes.
Bevin made scaling back the state’s expanded Medicaid a central plank of his platform during the campaign. He’s also a proponent of right-to-work legislation, which would forbid unions from collecting dues as a condition of employment.
