Masaac County Schools Ratifies New Contract with Teachers Union

The Masaac County board of education has a new contract with its teacher’s union which allows for pay raises over the next three years.

Unit 1 schools Superintendent Dennis Smith says the board and the 340 employee-union reached a tentative agreement on August 14th after weeks of negotiations. The BoE formally ratified the contract last night.

Smith says the three-year contract would result in total increases of $276,000 for teachers in the first year, and $236,000 in the second year.

“Now, these aren’t individual increases, you don’t want 340 different salaries," said Smith. "So basically it’s 3.1% new money for year one, and in year two it’s 2.6% new money for teachers, and 3% new money for support staff members.”

Smith says the contract does not include a description of money for year 3, but that it will be determined at a later date.  The contract also includes a bump in board contribution to staff insurance, but those numbers are still depending on which premium rate the board can secure.
The new contract is good through June 30th, 2018.
