Lexington Democrats in State House, Senate Prepare for New Majority

Republicans running for the state legislature registered many wins in Tuesday’s election.  The victories put the GOP in solid control of both houses of the General Assembly.

Republicans needed to take four seats in the state House to get majority control.  By night's end, GOP candidates had secured well over a dozen new seats in the 100 member chamber.

Lexington Senate Democrat Reggie Thomas serves in the Senate which Republicans have controlled for several sessions.  He looks for GOP priority bills to now win passage.  “I think some of the things they’ve been pushing for for years, right-to-work, prevailing wage, charter schools.  Yes, I think you’ll see that legislation come quickly,” said Thomas.

House Democrat Kelly Flood, who won reelection, worries diversity in leadership on budget subcommittees will lessen.  Just how big a night for Republicans was made evident when long-time House Speaker Greg Stumbo was ousted from his Floyd County seat.
