County clerks across Kentucky will be double checking vote totals tomorrow\today in a statewide recanvass requested by two Republicans.
Gubernatorial candidate James Comer is seeking a recanvass after losing to Matt Bevin by 83 votes in last Tuesday’s primary. Richard Heath lost to Ryan Quarles by just over 14-hundred votes in the race for the GOP nomination for Agriculture Commissioner. While Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes plans to announce the outcomes of the recanvass tomorrow\today, she says the winners will still be unofficial until next month.
“There is no nominee so the state board of election convenes on June 8th to certify the results of the election.”
While possible, Grimes doesn’t anticipate any surprises.
“In the years I have been Secretary of State, we’ve had several recanvasses. It has altered totals slightly but it has never altered the nominee.”
A recanvass checks voting machines to make sure the right numbers were recorded. Comer has said if he gains any votes in the recanvass, he may ask for a recount, a more detailed procedure that includes the manual counting of votes. A recount can only be ordered by a circuit judge.
