The Kentucky State Police is cracking down on semi-truck and commercial safety violations stemming from inadequate brake maintenance.
Brake failure is one of the leading causes of CMV accidents. On Wednesday, the KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division participated in a 24-hour nation-wide inspection campaign focusing on brake safety aiming to reduce overall traffic accidents.
SP Officer Harold Mosley says troopers conducted 95 CMV inspections and issued 130 citations.
“About 50 percent of the ones we found are brake related, usually with brake pads wearing too thin," said Mosley. "With commercial vehicles, they have to adjust their brakes, if they don’t adjust them they can be rendered completely inoperative and not work at all. There’s usually 90 plus fatalities each year in Kentucky involving CMVs.”
Along with safety citations, CVE officers also apprehended 2 fugitives with outstanding warrants throughout the course of the inspection campaign.
Mosley says commercial vehicles are involved in approximately 9 % of all traffic fatalities in Kentucky each year.
Mosley says the CVE division feels that statistically the campaign was an overall success in keeping Kentucky’s roadways safer.
