A state law enforcement official says a declining fatality rate in Kentucky can be attributed to a number of factors.
Kentucky State Police Spokesman Michael Webb says car design improvements, safe driving education and awareness efforts, and enforcement have all helped as the number of deaths on state highways has fallen.
Webb says police like to see "zero days." He says that's a day when no fatalities are recorded.
"And in 2013 we had more zero days than we had any year previously. And thankfully in 2013, we had an all-time low of traffic fatalities since 1947,” he said.
There were still 638 highways deaths recorded in Kentucky during 2013.
The fatality number for the Commonwealth so far this year is four less than the same time in August of last year. There were eight people killed across Kentucky during the Labor Day period in 2013.
