Kentucky Forest Fire Hazard Season Officially Ends, But Fires Still Possible

Although Kentucky’s fall forest fire hazard season officially ended December 15th, Kentucky Division of Forestry officials say people should remain vigilant when burning or building fires out in the open.

KDF Director Leah MacSwords says even though winter precipitation decreases the number of forest fires, it only takes a few sunny dry days to create favorable conditions.

Since January 1st, 2013, the KDF has suppressed 948 wildland fires that have burned a total of almost 23,000 acres across the state, that’s down from 1,234 fires in 2012.  Forestry officials reported that about 71% of the fires this year were attributable to arson, 16% to fires started from debris, and 15% attributable to other causes.

KDF officials say spring rains and cooler fall temperatures have likely contributed to lower fire numbers for 2013.
