Kentucky Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr. has been nominated by President Obama to serve on a federal board tasked with improving the state court systems across the county.
Minton is one of two nominations Obama made Friday to the State Justice Institute Board of Directors -- the other being Maryland Court of Appeals Chief Justice Mary Ellen Barbera.
Minton’s appointment will have to be confirmed by the US Senate.
“I am honored to be appointed to the SJI board and, if confirmed by the Senate, look forward to working with my future SJI board colleagues to award grants that will have impact at the national, state and local levels,” Chief Justice Minton said.
The SJI board awards grants to state courts to improve access, technology, self-represented litigants and juvenile justice.
The board is comprised of six state court judges, one state court administrator and four members of the public – two from each major political party.
