The Kentucky State Board of Elections has certified the results of the May 19 primary election, confirming that Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin bested rival James Comer by only 83 votes.
Secretary of state Alison Lundergan Grimes released the vote totals Monday. Nearly 400,000 Kentuckians turned out for the primary. That's 12.6 percent of registered voters.
“This election was truly historical,” Grimes said in the release. “I’m grateful to all of the elected officials and thousands of citizens who worked hard to ensure that candidates and voters alike could be confident in the fairness and results of the primary. I look forward to continuing to work together to prepare for the General Election on November 3.”
Bevin will face Democratic nominee Jack Conway in the general election. Potential independent candidates who have already filed statements of candidacy have until August 11 to file their petitions to run for statewide office.
